Tai Chi originated in China originally as a self
defense or fighting art. It was only taught to a select few and the
knowledge was a closely guarded secret. Each family had their own
style or method of Tai Chi and practice was held in private places
away from non family members. In fact, many people who practiced Tai
Chi denied they knew anything about it.
Over time the practice of Tai Chi has been used
as an exercise only, using the same movements but in slow motion.
Besides the slow motion movements breathing techniques are taught
along with focusing and relaxing the mind. This is an excellent
exercise for anyone of any age. Today there are five major forms of Tai Chi
that are practiced. They are Chen, Yang, Sun and two forms of Wu,
neither of which are related. The Yang form is the most widely
practiced form of Tai Chi today. Many western doctors are
recommending Tai Chi as an exercise to many of their patients today.
Tai Chi has shown that it can benefit almost anyone who practiced it.
